Fond memories of childhood football

Although I now reside in San Jose, California and have not lived in Jamestown for many years, I do enjoy reading about the island news and events through the online version of the Jamestown Press.

Growing up in Jamestown in the 80's, I often rode my bike up to the school to play flag football with the "older kids" in the evening. So, I was especially pleased to see that one of the "older kids" I remember seeing up there either refereeing or playing, Bill Piva, has resurrected the flag football games. It will be another great addition to Jamestown's already successful recreation program for youth.

Coincidentally, just this Sunday I found myself standing in the cold rain for hours watching my two boys, Harry and Gus, play for the first time, organized flag football! I couldn't help but wonder what it would be like for them to be playing at Jamestown school as I did. When we visited the island last summer, my boys loved the skateboard park and it was fun to show them where I attended middle school.

Growing up in Jamestown is a unique and wonderful experience in many ways. The support and guidance of my teachers, like Roger Chase, and my friends' parents, like Priscilla Foley, while I was growing up there made all the difference in my life, and I am forever grateful to the "Rock" for all it offered me while I was there.
