Roadwork on Newport bridge switches to eastbound lanes

Deck replacement on the Newport Pell Bridge is “moving along smoothly” as workers switch sides and remove dilapidated concrete on the eastbound lanes, officials said.

According to the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority, fresh concrete has been poured into the westbound lanes on the eastern approach of the span. The old concrete was blasted away using high-powered water jets and the steel rebar underneath was repaired. The westbound lanes will remain closed 24/7 while the concrete hardens.

Core samples are being taken from the concrete to ensure it achieves the proper strength and density. When it passes official testing, work will switch to the eastbound lanes. There will be permanent single lanes through November during this phase.
