John T. Sugrue

John T. Sugrue, retired R.I. state police, 58, died Feb 1, 2018, after a long battle with malignant pheochromocytoma cancer.

He was the beloved husband of Gemma G. ( Guinguing) Sugrue.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late John P. and Mary (Degnan) Sugrue. Jack lived in Jamestown for 33 years and loved to swim in the ocean in Rhode Island and Florida.

In addition to his wife Gemma, he is survived by his son, Thomas B. Sugrue, 2; two brothers, William T. Sugrue of West Warwick and Battalion Chief Thomas P. Sugrue (Warwick Fire Department) of Warwick; two sisters, Mary S. Colman of Narragansett and Patricia S. Arruda of Swansea; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Jack was a graduate of Our Lady of Providence Seminary in 1977, the R.I. State Police Training Academy in 1979, and received his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Roger Williams College in 1981.

Jack was a retired sworn member of the Rhode Island State Police and honorably served in both uniform and detective divisions, receiving numerous departmental commendations.

Jack’s state police 1979 classmates have started a YouCaring education fund for Jack and Gemma’s son, Tommy.
