Volunteers needed to tally birds on island

Volunteers are needed for the annual spring bird count from 6:30 a.m. to noon May 12 at the police station, 250 Conanicus Ave.

Volunteers will be divided into four groups to search the farms, the north end, Beavertail and the village. Birders should bring binoculars, field guides and sturdy walking shoes. The groups will meet back at the police station to tally results.

The record for the spring count, now in its 34th year, is 114 species in 1995. Residents who see birds at their homes can report their findings by calling Candy Powell at 423-1492.
